New Vid - Prison Break "Sacrifice" (Michael Centric)
I decided to post my vids here as well cause my blog seem to have lots of problems lately....

Please refrain from distributing...

Description : Michael Centric with Lincoln and Sara. The video narrates the journey of Michael through Season 2 : running, dealing with regrets and mistakes and sacrifices. I hope it shows what lead him to do the sacrifices he made.

Music: "Elisium" and "Sorrow" by Hans Zimmer (Gladiator SoundTrack), "Running One" by Tykwer/Klimek/Heil

Notes: My goal was to display the struggle inside Michael's character, the constant reminder of what he did and how he must live with it. I also wanted to show his desire to make everything right will leads him to the sacrifice he makes in the end. Lincoln and Sara hence have a presence over the video without shadowing Michael because without them, he has no reason to do what he's doing. I wanted to properly describe the character's journey while remaining true to the show. I hope I did *cross fingers*

I used a similar structure than "My Life In 3 Parts" last year, meaning several songs for several aspects of the character as I didn't find a song that would fit what I was trying to do. It was a bit risky as it harder to have a coherent ensemble this way but I still hope it worked. I worked on the music a lot at first, deleted and remixed some parts, to create something that would flow naturaly without boring the viewer (especially during the action part). I worked on the overall rythmn of the video, and aimed at having a good balance between action and "drama". I tried to prevent the "entertainement" factor from fading half way through the vid and tried to built a growing action to do that. I also experimented a bit with sounds and music mix to enhance some "memory struggle" moments. I hope it paid off.
The action part was actually the trickiest for me, as I'm so much more confortable with character oriented slow-paced vid. Prison Break doesn't really have blow away source material. I really had to dig up to find  enough shots action-oriented. Overall, it ended up challenging me so I guess that's a good thing.
I also used bits of dialogue again, as I think it can really add an emotionnal layer to the vid, especially when there's no lyrics.

I hope some of you will like it :). Feel free to leave a comment, it's greatly appreciated :)

In my offline stint I asked [info]bradcpu to keep a list of notable vids, and this was one of them. I really enjoyed the wonderful pacing and movement in this, as well as the overall emotion even though I don't really know the show. The music editing is fantastic. Wonderful job!

Thank you so much :) It means a lot.
the overall emotion even though I don't really know the show
I'm really glad you said that, especially if you don't watch the show. I really tried to make the emotion/character struggle transpire through the vid and I'm glad it showed off not only for me :)

The music editing is fantastic
Thank you :) I think this was one of the main experiment on this vid. It's not visually stunning in terms of editing but I did try to work on the music/sound and create something "new". I'm glad you liked that.

Thanks again for the comment, it's very very much appreciated. :)

First of I have to thank you for motivating me to finish the second season of Prison Break as I had stopped watching after 207 for no reason and really enjoyed finishing the season. But anyways, after I did that, I was able to see this vid and I love it! You capture the emotion very well with all of Michael's losses and all of the people he truly loves and is trying to save. I like how you framed it with the opening and closing showing *why* he's running and the middle being so cool with all the action sequences of escaping.

I love the beginning with him in the church and how you intercut to him dealing with all the bad that's happened because of him. And I really like the effects you use with the dissolves and flashes to the music. I particularly love the cross over his father's grave and the fade into his tear which made it even more emotionally meaningful. I absolutely love how you switch so well into them running with the music and the internal motion in this section is fantastic. Some of my favorites were the car driving in the same direction as Michael running at 1:09, everyone running through the high grass, the whole running sequence at 1:35 when you can clearly see the agent chasing, the helicopter and car which was perfect with the external motion and the running at 1:47. I also loved the overlays especially the states over the police and the car and train. I think you do a really great job of breaking up the running shots and putting in far shots and object shots to give the viewer something else to look at.

The car crash at 2:00 was awesome with it fitting so well with the music and showing the effects when the runners collided. And then I loved the fades to Michael's turning head showing his reaction to all the losses which you picked great clips to show. My favorites was Sara being tortured down into the water as Tweener falls to the ground and both guys being shot to Sucre in the ground, in the crucification position. The bloody shots of people just made it more clear what was being sacrificed. I love how you showed the parallel of Michael and Sara's fathers' both dying. I really like the fades in Michael walking across the field. I absolutely love how you show the bonds Michael makes from the hug with Sara, his holding his father (makes me cry especially there) and his moments with Lincoln. And the end is just hauntingly beautiful showing his final sacrifice and how well the dark prison works with the music especially with the angel wings. Wonderful vid!

Also it's really awesome to see more great Prison Break vids! Do you know of any others besides Ragged Ass Road?

Thanks so much for the big review !! Means a lot and it's always great to hear what people enjoyed or not in your vid :)
It's good to hear the part you liked were highlights for me too. :)
I think you do a really great job of breaking up the running shots and putting in far shots and object shots to give the viewer something else to look at.
I'm really glad you like the chase part, it's not my usual territory and I tried to mix the chasing, running shots in a way that wouldn't bore the viewer and would escalate. So I was relaly pleased with you comments on that. yay.
Glad you love the end as well, I put it a lot of energy to try to convey the right emotion :)

Do you know of any others besides Ragged Ass Road?
I actually don't know this one. I need to look for it. Heh.
As far as other vid, I haven't seen lots of great vid, but came across a few nice ones recently on youtube (I know...). Entertaining if you love the show. Some of them have website I think.

The chasing part was definitely very exciting and one of my favorite parts.

Ragged Ass Road is here and is absolutely amazing overview of S1. It's one of my favorite vids, period. Thank you so much for your recs! I will check those out. And yes! I'm definitely interested, where are the rest of your vids?
buffyann[info]buffyann on July 5th, 2007 07:59 pm (UTC)

There's a little shipper one ^^ it's not stunning, vidding-wise, it was for me basically lol. The other is a season 1 michael character study. I wish to reedit it a bit but oh well... :)

I'll try to check some of your vid this week end :)
I love the vidding communities, it's awesome.

This was great, I really enjoyed it. I love the way you had Michael's tear fall as the music swelled. Your pacing and control of emotion throughout was wonderful, and the transition from slow to fast and back was well-done. Thanks for sharing!
