Lyrics
Another child is born
Another race is won
Another dream is shattered
Another day has begun

This world is still afloat
No not in Noah's boat
We've only lost the vision
Of the stars we're meant to be

This world is still afloat
No not in Noah's boat
We've only lost the vision
Of the stars we're meant to be

This world is full of love
We still have hope
This world is full of love
We still have hope
This world is full of love
We still have hope
This world is full of love
We still have hope
This world is full of love
We still have hope
This world is full of love
We still have hope

Notes
This vid had been in my head back in november 07, I had a somehow different idea in mind then, I thought it would be something deeper, but given the approaching VVC deadlines, I just did something rather simple in the end. and I think I feel a bit disappointed by the result now because of that.
But who's to say if I had had more time, I would have made something else, we never know :P

The idea for this came very early on from watching the pilot of BSG and whenever the opening credits came in, there was just something about them that totally marked me then. It wasn't the usual SciFi music, it carried so much more, so much pain and hope as well. it was clearly established then for me, how the show was not about scifi, but about this lost civilization looking for a meaning and a way to survive. It's always been what dragged me to BSG. And so this vid is suppose to mirror this idea. The lyrics tell you the rest better than me.

This vid was also the first one ever I really tried to storyboard. Usually, I use songs with more of a general mood attached to them than very lyric oriented songs. This time was different and I also wanted to see if storyboarding would in anyway help me vid faster. I'm not sure it did. But it gave me the feeling I was less messy. But I'm sure I was as messy as I was before.
I took a pic of my vidding board while I was making the vid, which you can see here, if you're curious (forgive me for some french words here and there, and some notes like words of vocab I write down to remember ;)). That was the content of the vid, as I pictured it in my head through most of the process. Things were decided after but basically, the idea's there. :-)

This is such a visual feast! Stunning motion. It all feels very evocative and moody. The struggle for survival has never looked so beautiful.

This vid was amazing and mesmerizing. The fluidity of the images is fantastic and really gives a sense of the volume of space, and the enormity of their struggle.

I love that your dynamic is truly fluid--lots of other people are just "messy" when they try to blend scenes the way you do. Your style is so controlled and lyrical!

So many great moments--but I think the "full circle" moment you mentioned was my favorite.

We've only lost the vision
I'm extremely moved by this vid and the journey I went on not only with you, but the vid and the show itself. I tend to focus on the Cylon aspects of BSG, so this vid was a hard hit for me. They struggle so fiercely and you make it look so beautiful. The pacing and build is graceful in execution. The stories you decided to follow hit just the right spots. There's deep, minute pains that are coupled with loud, hige devastations. There's a delicate balance that you achieved.

The saluting, the eye into Tigh, the explosion, the minature into the ship, the cup, Cally, the paper, the assassinations, blood drops, turning, Zak's funeral, the gun, boxing, clocks, Kara's look of pure hope, the slowing down into life, and the continuation of their journey.

Re: We've only lost the vision
I tend to forget about most of the humans in BSG. There's very few that interest me besides Cain. I'm more intriqued by the other and how they effect the Cylon. All that said, I adore this vid.

When I first started watching I thought "how in the world is this going to work?", but for what its worth...you've made a believer of me!

I felt myself drifting away into the source which means you did a fantastic job.

Great stuff!

Lyrical, yes; moving, yes; compelling, yes. I especially love the use of clips showing violence and anguish on "This world is full of love", leading into the assertion that "we still have hope". For me, that just nails the fleet's struggle.

Very nice.
buffyann[info]buffyann on August 26th, 2008 08:09 pm (UTC)
thank you ! I always felt strongly about the fleet's struggle for survival so it means a lot ! thank you !

That video is seamless and hypnotic. I really like your musicality here especially the way you used the vocals. I also love your use of motion.

PS : Nice vidding board. I usually do the same thing with a word file but I gotta say it looks better on a real board ;)
buffyann[info]buffyann on August 26th, 2008 08:11 pm (UTC)
Thank you very much ! and thank you for taking to time to comment. We talked about you at the con and how we all saw you posted new vids we didn't watch yet. This will happen eventually though, you've been noticed ;) just fyi.

the board is just an attempt at being organized LOL

I liked this a lot. There's a certain elegance to the song that you match up nicely with the show, if that makes sense. :)

Wow! How did you make Battlestar so PRETTY?!!! :) This is a gorgeous, gorgeous piece, and I wish I was not so tired and could come up with more articulate feedback to do it justice. The spirit of hope is something I have loved about BSG for a long time, but it's been tough lately to see it in the show--so thank you for returning a little of that soaring feeling.
buffyann[info]buffyann on August 26th, 2008 08:12 pm (UTC)
oh, what a lovely thing to say ! thanks a lot !
there's always hope beyond the worst despair, that's my thinking ;)

This vid is captivating. It seems to be about contrast. There's the slow, mellow music against the explosions and action, and the lyrics "this world is full of love" against a whole lot of blood and violence. It creates a strangely conflicted mood that is really cool!
buffyann[info]buffyann on August 26th, 2008 08:14 pm (UTC)
It's usually when you're urt that you realise what you're fighting for, so it made sense for me to do this. Thanks for pointing it out ! and thank you for commenting :D

I love the mix of ethereal beauty and grim reality in this vid...you've really nailed what makes BSG so compelling to me, that struggle to keep hope alive and to even *remember why* it's worth it to have hope. The lyrical flow of the vid is stunning...like from 1:15 to 1:21, where I literally feel like I float and fly along with your visuals. So beautiful!

Thank you so much for the wonderful comment ! :)
and thanks for the timestamp, it's always so cool to see what particular moment worked for people. :) Thanks so much. Lyrical, I like that :D

I've finally gotten around to disc 2 of VVC feedback! Only 3 months too late. :P

Like Headlights, the thing that really strikes me about this vid is how well you use two layers of music: the smooth synth/strings for the gliding spacecraft motion and external camerawork, and the beats for explosions and other beat-centred internal motion. The whole thing moves so beautifully. I think out of everyone's vids that I've seen, yours really stand out in terms of always coming across as one cohesive whole that simply flows through from start to end seamlessly.

As a journey in mood, I thought it was set up beautifully and carried out really well. Starting with individuals in their own little worlds (often barred or locked into some sort of pod/cell), move into grander fighing scenes and lots of conflict, and then coming out of the other side as these individuals find ways to connect with each other and, in the very end, alone again but much more hopeful about their place in the world and how they connect to others.

The thing that really struck me was how ironic the lyrics seemed in the midpart of the vid, because everything you see is so hard and horrible and completely devoid of hope. But you show all that can still be redeemed in the end and that's what stands out.

My absolutely favourite moments:
0:27 candle comes in on the vocals
0:51 eye to water drop
1:06 the beat kicks in on the explosion
1:17 the raptor rotates on the vocals
1:36 this shot here just sits so well with the music
1:41 love how the guns rotate on the synth
The whole section in the middle where the world is totally not full of love and have hope is just fantastic. I love how it flows from one person to the next in a mindless blur of violence and anger and sadness. Just really beautifully done.
2:43 the fly-over on the music is fantastic
2:59 LOVE the long flight on the strings!
I also thought the ending from 3:25 onward was so important because it ties back to the start and shows that these people have come a long way. Without it, the vid's structure would have been much more desolate.

Gorgeous vid, dear. *hugs*

mmm, sorry I just got to replying now. I feel very lame, especially since you gave me the best feedback EVER.

This vid is very much like Headlights, you're totally right. In fact, I kept calling it "its twin sister" while making it. It kinda annoyed me I was doing something so similar to what I did before but it was inspiring so, you know.

because everything you see is so hard and horrible and completely devoid of hope
It kinda makes sense to me to show that because it's when you're going through horrible things that you need hope. And also because most of those horrible things are done out of love for something or someone. Whether it's the dream of the earth, whether it's to protect someone you love, or to try and salvage what's left of your life. It's in pain that you realise how much you love, and that's the hope. I don't know if I make sense. But I think that's why people can react to that.
Though you can definitely choose to look at it in a more bitter way, I suppose too. :)

and thanks so much for the timestamps since they pin point moments that I loved as well :)
To sum up, THANK YOU !!!! :)

I can't believe I've never commented to this vid before! Gah, shame on me!
It is truly gorgeous though. The way it just flows so seamlessly from start to finish.
I have to second what some other people have said in that I really love the juxtaposition of the lyrics and the harsh reality that is shown in the clips.
I think this captures so beautifully what the show is about. :)

I'm glad you saw it that way, this is the show I'm watching and i'm glad people like you enjoy it for that reason :D
