So I lay my head to rest
All alone it seems.
There my guide is waiting
In a land of dreams.

Notes
This vid has been the hardest I've made so far, both in terms of concept and actual vidding. Started this casually back in 07 when I wanted to use Heroes as source to make something shiny and almost "easy". Just a floating dream of shiny images. ahah, NOT !

I think what I was trying to say was sorta clear in my head, but I somehow couldn't  put it into the vid, rationnaly. My lack of passion for the show didn't help the matter. In the end, all the pauses I took not working on it were a really good thing and allowed me to start fresh every time. I also have to credit [info]counteragent

Well it certainly does have a floaty dream-like feel. It has such fluidity of motion and yet has that slightly off kilter feel that comes with dreams. Peter's smile of acceptance at 2.24 really completes his journey and it's quite nice to have an angst free version of Peter.

Thank you !
I always really liked that side of peter, the side of him that is just trying to make the world better. I wanted something hopeful for him :)
Thank you for commenting !

All along it seems.
Wow. There is such mood and atmosphere created. I feel like I'm in a new and different world when I watch this vid. It's dreamy and languid, almost like my perception has been altered. It's very cerebrel. The music choice is truly inspired. It casts a slow and sleepy feel over everything, yet it still has an alien energy to it. I especially loved the play of color and the music matching. You have a great knack for going with the perfect clips, like the meandering camera twists. The slide from the painting of Peter into the buildings and the flares is amazing in the :40s. The layering is beautiful too.

Re: All along it seems.
oh thank you for pointing out all those things ! I'm glad the music choice worked for you, it had something very "spiritual" attached to it to me, that seemed to match Peter's journey.
Thank you so much for this comment ! It mad eme all sort of happy !

Oh gosh, just saw the post you made in the vidding comm, and you used 2 of my all time favourite songs: This world and Magic Theatre...I'm a little spooked, in a good way, so I think I'll have to watch them even if sadly I don't know BSG...you have great musical tastes anyway, I thought I'd tell you that for now :)
buffyann[info]buffyann on August 27th, 2008 10:13 pm (UTC)
oh thanks !!! Magic Theater has been a favourite of mine for years and suddenly, this vid formed into my head. It's so amazing to be able to vid with a song you adore. :D

Ohhhh WOW!

I actually came to your journal to watch 'This World' (which has been much recced to me) but it's still downloading so I checked this out in the meantime, and: WOW!

Confession: I'm a pretty hard sell where a Peter Petrelli vid is concerned. I used to watch Heroes but became disenchanted with the show. Before then, I watched a looooot of vids, and Peter was never my favourite character, so I got pretty sick of Peter vids.

But this has rocketed into my top 5 Heroes vids. I looove the atmosphere you create with this vid and I was mesmerised the whole way through. Considering the lack of lyrics and how familiar all the imagery was to me that seems AMAZING!

*much applause*
buffyann[info]buffyann on August 27th, 2008 10:15 pm (UTC)
oh thanks SO much !!!!

I am too not such a big fan of the show. ironically. and was tired of all those reused and repeated clips. so I was scared of the reaction people would have to it
I'm so glad it worked for you despite all this.

Thanks so much !!!!

I am ill-equipped to comment on Heroes vids since I gave up watching after the first season...but it really felt like that didn't matter at all during Premieres because I was so drawn into the mood and atmosphere you created here! The moment at 0:22 (the transition into the shot out the window, looking at the city) takes my breath away every time.

te[info]tearful_eye on September 3rd, 2008 05:05 pm (UTC)
wow, this is absolutely beautiful.

the vid feels like a dream itself - i love the fluid editing & motion & colour changes throughout the vid... it feels like it's always changing between being a memory (peter remembering stuff), a nightmare & a beautiful dream of flying, being alive...

just stunning.
buffyann[info]buffyann on September 3rd, 2008 06:10 pm (UTC)
thank you so much !
I'm so glad you felt the changes between dream and reality :)
I wanted to oppose the reassuring but still ominous feeling of the dreams versus the harsh but yet hopeful reality. :)
I'm really really glad it worked for you :) thank you
aycheb[info]aycheb on September 5th, 2008 01:17 pm (UTC)
This is beautiful and memerising. It feels as if it’s early Peter dreaming his future right up until the end when the clarity of the final clip seems to change the whole POV to one of later Peter finally recovering his past, memories suddenly clicking into focus. I really like that.
buffyann[info]buffyann on September 5th, 2008 11:32 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much for this comment ! I'm glad the narrative made sense to you as well :)

I'm on a feedbacking rampage and you're up next! And I'm starting with this because I remember how awesome it was to see it on the big screen for the first time. It's got this unsettling abandoned funhouse feel that does a lot to capture the simultaneous wonder and fear Peter seemed to experience in season one. The music is a really cool choice. It's not what I usually expect to see vidded (as is the case for a lot of your work) but as usual you totally pull it off. You have a real gift for taking unexpected song choices and making them seem like they were written for the source.

Timestamps!

0:04 - LOVE the distortion in time with the music. Made the rooftop scene seem fresh despite its being vidded fifty bazillion times.
0:08 - I don't usually comment on credits but I really like what you did here. It makes me feel like I'm being sucked into Peter's world.
0:35 - Nice hint of a spinny overlay as Peter falls off
0:42 - Eee, love the continued motion on the pan down
0:47 - Great connection with the light flare
1:03 - And then the vocals kick in and it's so...haunting. It works especially well with the shot of Peter falling through the air.
1:10 - Nice quick flashes
1:19 - Ooh, very pretty overlay/masking with the Claire painting
2:09 - Really love the use of the paintings throughout, but especially here
2:12 - That color shift was added by you, right? I like it!

Peter flies away and I feel like the vid is over too quickly. This is really wonderful Alex. It epitomizes what a mood vid should be. But of course given that it's you we're talking about, that really shouldn't be a surprise. ;)
buffyann[info]buffyann on October 17th, 2008 09:41 am (UTC)
I can't tell you how happy reading this made me :D \o/ Especially since this vid took forever to make, I had no clue if it was gonna work so I'm really really happy here :D
This is really wonderful Alex. It epitomizes what a mood vid should be.
Thank you, thank you !!! :D

Thanks so much for the timestamps, especially since you pointed out my favourite things !

That color shift was added by you, right? I like it!
Yes :) and thanks ! I played a lot with colors to try to show the constrast the real world from the dream one and the transitions between both. so YAY for you liking it :)

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this comment. It just means a whole lot, especially given your love for Peter ;)

Both of your VVC premieres were gorgeous. I think we in the IC have different opinions of which ones we like better, purely from a personal preference perspective, and I think this one is my personal favourite of your vids that screened at VVC. Maybe just because Heroes footage is spectacular and you used it so well! :D It's certainly extremely dreamy, haha.

0:04 love the back and forth cutting. Reminded me a bit of DC's Damaged at this point.
0:12 love the musical expression on the pull out on his eye
0:25 gorgeous fast, smooth movement on this shot
0:34 lovely composition of clock and falling, and the quick overlay of him and Sylar on the ground
0:43 gorgeous continued movement from the painting to the buildings
0:48 love how you joined the two clips by the light!
1:11 in the blue segment, the orange and red painting flashes look really good, and I love how it cuts on the music.
1:27 I really like how you joined these two clips by the movement.
1:28 another fabulous zoom out on eye on that musical element!
1:35 I LOVE that movement on this sound.
2:00 I really love how the fade to white leads to the picture on the string, then you cut straight to the train scene as it is on the picture. It's smooth and really effective.
2:06 like the dissolve into a moment later here.
2:13 this shift into blue really brings home what you're trying to do with the colour scheme.

Beautiful, dreamy (hehe) vid!

It's certainly extremely dreamy, haha.
hehe. well, it's called "dreams" so at least, I didn't lie on what to expect ;)

Thank you so much for all the time stamps, especially n the work on movement to music, it was definitely one of the goal here, since Heroes source has so much great shots to use.

thank you again for taking the time to comment :)

I downloaded your entry at FNVA and was absolutely blown away and mesmerized by your work. I figured the least I could do was come by and comment the video.

The video brilliantly conveyed a feeling of lost-ness (I know that's not a word lol)with the character. An uneasiness and unknown identity for himself. The editing was terrific, pretty simple and clean but beautiful with such a wonderful touch to editing with the music. Great use of overlays and clip selection to try evoking the emotions you did. The video was very surreal feeling, which I liked... I really loved the atmosphere you created. I don't even really know the source, but I love this video. It's unbelievable. I'll be catching some of your others (I have seen a few others from you, this would be my favorite as of now). Wow... what a piece of art!

Thank you so much for this wondeful comment. I'm so touched you could connect with the vid this much and thanks for mentionning the athmosphere :) it really means a lot. thank you !
