La route chante,
Quand je m'en vais.
Je fais trois pas,
La route se tait.

La route est noire,
À perte de vue.
Je fais trois pas,
La route n'est plus.

Sur la marée haute,
Je suis monté.
La tête est pleine,
Mais le coeur n'a pas assez.

Mains de dentelle,
Figure de bois,
Le corps en brique,
Les yeux qui piquent.

Mains de dentelle,
Figure de bois.
Je fais trois pas
Et tu es là.

Sur la marée haute,
Je suis monté.
la tête est pleine,
Mais le coeur n'a pas assez.
The road is singing
When i set out
I take three steps…
The road grows silent

The road is dark
As far as i can see
I take three steps…
The road is gone

I climbed up
On the high tide
The head is full
But the heart wants more

Hands of lace
Wooden face
Body of brick
Eyes that sting

Hands of lace
Wooden face
I take three steps…
And you are there

I climbed up
On the high tide
The head is full
But the heart wants more

This was my first experience with Sweet Charity and certainely I had been nervous about it and about my capacity to follow someone's request. Luckily for me, the bidder has been incredibly understanding about the song and subjects choice, the creative process and the delays to make the vid, so I hope that the vid delivers enough considering.
I initially offered myself at the charity to push me to do something different, but I don't think I was successful in the regard ;)

Desmond is my favourite character on the show, so vidding him and his link to Penny felt right. But soon did I realise how hard it was to
vid someone with such non-linear storylines. His story is a mess, of flashbacks and fast forwards, or being at 2 places in time at once. I remember talking to Milly about this. So I chose to mirror this mess, and try to make sense of it to show who this character was and what he was going through and hoping for.

External footage comes from "Deep Blue". This was triggered by the feeling of the song, the poetry universe of the lyrics, show, and storylines as well, as well as Desmond's spirit, the fight against himself to win this boat race, the sea-world that surrounds him.

You've done a great job with this. Love all the motion and matching and heartbreak. The song is beautiful and now that I know what the lyrics mean, I can say that it is a wonderful choice meaning-wise as well.

Thank you !!! I'm glad you could enjoy it without the lyrics, it means a lot :D

I've never watched Lost so I don't know any plot specifics, but I was captivated by this vid. :} It's so dynamic and emotional, and I was swept up completely. The things you did with the ocean imagery in particular were just stunning. :D

Thank you so much ! it means a lot that you could connect with it without knowing the show and I'm especially glad you enjoyed the external footage use as I had my doubts this would work for anyone besides me.
Thank you !

This is BEAUTIFUL. Your use of motion seriously surpassed even my expectations and that's no easy feat, I can tell you. The matching of the turning head motions was brilliant and very reminiscent of Jarrow's Love Turns 40 - I know you're a big fan of that vid so perhaps some of that was conscious homage? Whether yes or not, it was beautifully done all the same. The pacing is simply superb, the bits where you go into supercharged motion particularly chill-inspiring (0:47 - the eye!). And the external footage! *draws little hearts around the vid* And omg, 2:36 with the light through the trees!!! So gorgeous!

And I have no idea what the vid is about. :P nonetheless, the editing captured me through and through and I really, really liked it.

Your use of motion seriously surpassed even my expectations
Of all things, I did not expect this !!! o_O Thanks !
I never thought motion would be a problem since Lost is a recent show and I thought "there's beautiful shots in there I could use", but it turns out : not so much. so I had to use the head motion a lot ahahah. I guess maybe Jarrow's influence there, you're right, though I didn't think this consciously. It's funny you mention this since there's a small hommage to you in there ;)

I'm so glad you liked the external footage use !!! :D
It's great that you could enjoy this without knowing the show, that means a lot.
YAY timestamps !
Thanks for commenting !!! :D *hugs*

Des/Pen, lovely! This vid has such a beautiful dreamlike quality to it, with the back and forth cutting between the flashbacks, the island and the waves. I think I need to watch it a fourth time.

Thank you so much :) I'm glad you enjoyed the imagery.

So pretty! I agree with Nicky, the use of head turns reminds me a lot of Love Turns 40. I can see how this story would be difficult to vid but I think you made the right call in keeping things non-linear and jumbled. I don't know what's going on anyway so it's all good to me. ;)

The ocean footage is all really pretty and very well integrated with the Lost clips. Had you not mentioned it I would have assumed they're from the same source. Although I suppose Lost doesn't look that artsy. :)

I also like that it's in French. Was this the song you were unsure about? It's pretty and I don't mind not being able to understand the lyrics. The emotion comes through loud and clear anyways.

Favorite moments:
0:12 - Turning to the side and then up, on beat no less. Nice continued motion there.
0:46 - Love the quick cuts ending with the eye.
0:52 - Cool color shift and nice use of an extended clip.
0:53 - GORGEOUS continued motion. I love it when you do that. :D
0:56 - Hee, love the number flip over the little ping in the music.
1:46 - Great use of rolling clouds over the fluttering in the music.
1:56 - Lovely spinny pan over the strings.
2:01 - Hee, explosion over a little ping!

I love how everything starts to spiral out of control by the end. You handle the build perfectly. And then there's that moment of respite with the ocean footage before the ending montage of quick cuts. That was awesome.

Great work hun! Your bidder definitely got their money's worth. :D

Timestamps !!! thank you so much for pointing those out !
I'm glad it worked for you despite knowing the show. :D

Was this the song you were unsure about?
Actually no. This song was chosen by the bidder, but it did make me think about vidding more in french. :) I'm glad you could enjoy it despite the language, that means a lot. and certainely "scares" me less about doing it again.

Thanks so much for the wonderful comment *hugs*

This vid is everything I love about Desmond. And it's *so pretty*...the music, and the movement, and the timing. Just beautiful. I love the way you used the song. Also, the external footage? Utterly fabulous.

I don't know the fandom or anything about the character, but this is just *stunning*. Some absolutely tremendous use of visual metaphors, and the pacing is to die for.

My favorite moments:

That transition at 0:52 just knocked me flat. The gathering storm in the 1:40s really works so well with both the music and the building of the story, and the continued motion at ~2 mins is just gorgeous. Then when it comes back to the sunlight through the trees near the end... WOW. Just awesome stuff.

This is *extremely* good, Alex.

This makes me so happy ! Thank you so much !!!

I wouldn't have thought this could really work for people who didn't know the show, especially with a french song, so I'm really glad you could somehow enjoy it.

and thanks for the timestamping :D *hugs*

Here via Nicky's rec. I pretty much know nothing about the technicalities of vidding or anything, really. But this? Was so very beautiful. :) I love how it just builds up until the very end.

Aw wow this is beautiful!
I love all the connections with the water, that's awesome. And the movement and pace is just perfect. You did a wonderful job making sense of poor Desmond's story. I really love this :)

wow, this is completely AMAZING.

i have no idea what's going on, because i've never watched lost (and probably never will) - but the emotions are so clear in this vid, it made me all chocked up. the love, the desperation, the psycho-freak-out crap & everything... so POWERFUL. i'm really in awe of the awesome here! & i adore your editing (okay, i always do, but still) - the motion, the franticness, the focus on the waves, ...just stunning, & so beautiful.

i only downloaded this because i'm in love with lhasa (i can't wait for the new album!) & this song is one of my favorites :) so i guess this is a big factor why the vid hit me so hard, when i didn't even know the character; but i really, really love this. my heart broke a little for someone i've never even heard of before.

buffyannbuffyann on April 4th, 2009 04:53 pm (UTC)
oh thank you *so* much for this comment :)
I love Lhasa too, so I was really happy when the bidder offered that song as a possibility. It is so powerful, it really carried the mood for the character, I felt, and I wanted to honor that.

I'm surprised to have such comments on movement cause I didn't feel it was a full of motion kinda vid. but I guess I'm a gluton for motion so I can't escape it hehe.

Thank you again for this wonderful comment ! :)
